Local’s Guide: Where to Eat & Party in Austin during SXSW Music Festival
As an Austinite of 7 years and a SXSW Music Festival attendee the past 3 years, I bring you my version of the Austin bucket list and I guarantee it's the best version out there. Where to Eat in Austin: Breakfast/Brunch/Lunch: Tacos N Tequila – The ultimate place to get brunch in Austin which is quite an honor to have especially from a foodie like myself. But srsly, it’s the only place where you can pay $20 to eat an up-scale full buffet with everything your tex-mex heart desires (and it includes 2 mimosas). Located on 5th street downtown. Chez Zee American Bistro – They have a HUGE brunch menu and all of their dishes are made from scratch. Their migas are to die for and so are the croissants and jam butter which they give FO FREE! There will be a wait unless you go at 1:30/2. Located in Far West which is about 10-15 mins north of downtown. Most of them serve god damn delicious food and leave you wondering how the hell they made that in a truck. Some of the most popular food trucks with locals (including myself) are Kebabalicious, Chi’Lantro, Best Wurst, My Big Fat Greek Gyro, and Mighty Cone. Most of these are located in or around downtown. But check their social media to confirm location especially during SXSW. Torchys Tacos/Tacodeli – I am definitely a Torchys girl FO SHO, but I do eat Tacodeli every once in a while. Torchys of course wins in the queso battle. The migas at Tacodeli seem more fresh and flavorful, but I still eat migas at Torchy’s A LOT. If you come to Austin and don’t try Torchys then F*** you. No I’m just kidding… but srsly.. go there or you are missing out. Dinner empanadas malaga austin Malaga Tapas – One of my most favorite restaurants in Austin. It is a bit pricey but it’s totally worth it. My fav dishes are the crab croquettes and the spinach/mushroom empanadas (and I’m not even a mushroom person lol)! Their sangrias are also pretty tasty. Since this is a tapas restaurant, you should go with a few friends so that y'all can try several items. This place is located downtown on 2nd street. Stubbs – Stubbs is probably one of the best music venues in Austin, but it’s also a great place to grab some down home country BBQ. I have been to Stubbs many times and I usually just get a brisket sandwich so that I can continue watching the show. But last time I went, I stumbled (literally) into their restaurant and sat down to eat some apps and sober up a bit. The food was savory and just what I need to boost my energy so that I could keep partying all night. Located downtown on Red River. Restaurants Open Late: Kerbey Lane- This is definitely an Austin classic. Open 24/7. Great place to grab a late night meal or eat breakfast/brunch. The queso is AHH-MAZING and so are the migas. I have also had their eggs Francisco (an Austin twist on eggs benedict), lamb burger, fried chicken mac n cheese. I would eat all of those dishes again and again! Kerbey is always ON POINT. Be forewarned, there is always a wait in the mornings during breakfast/brunch time. They have several locations. The closest to downtown is probably the UT location. 24 Diner – I haven’t ever been to this place. I have been meaning to try it out though because I have heard several people rave about their food. This diner is open 24/7 so it’s definitely the place to go after a night of drinking and watching shows! I heard the chicken n waffles were the bomb dot com. Located downtown near Whole Foods. Where to Party in Austin: Let me start by saying that many places downtown change completely during SXSW Music Festival so you might not be able to hang out at these places because they are official SXSW venues, but it doesn't hurt to check their social media page and/or call them. Kung Fu Saloon - Pickle shots and giant JENGA is all that needs to be said about this bar and club. Located downtown on West 6th Street. Phara's - A BYOB Mediterranean restaurant and hookah lounge. This place is one of Austin's best kept secret. Seriously a great way to spend an Austin spring or summer night with your crew or bae. Pro tip: Take some playing cards. You will likely be chillin here a while getting your drank and grub on. Located on North Loop Blvd. The Goodnight - This place is the farthest away from downtown, but if you want to get away from SXSW and all the crowds, then this is a legit hangout spot. They have bowling, billiards, skee ball, shuffleboard, and private karaoke rooms. Located in North Austin on Anderson Lane. The Ginger Man - This is a beer lovers' dream! They probably have a 100 different types of beer. I had a couple Chimay beers when I was there and was feeling on point! I also had their meat + cheese plate and it was perfect with the cerveza. Located downtown on Lavaca street in the Warehouse District. Speakeasy - Multi level bar. 1st level = live music. 2nd level = bowling. 3rd level = dance club. Always a good time when I go here. Fun fact: It's also considered to be haunted and is part of the Haunted Austin Tour. Located downtown on Congress Ave. Pinthouse Pizza - Great for you and your whole entourage! Not only do they brew their own beer, but they have huge selection of other beers including seasonal picks. Not to to mention, they also have some amazing food. Choose from mouth watering pizza, warm pretzels with two dips, and damn good queso that even gives Torchy's a run for it's money. Located on Burnet Road. Some of my personal favorite bars on "dirty" Sixth Street include: The Library, Shakespeare's, Maggie Maes, and The Blind Pig. Now go forth and enjoy some of the best bars/restaurants in Austin and have a ROCKIN' SXSW 2016! Don't forget to check out our music festival outfits.
