SXSW Festival: The Alternative Spring Break Experience
If you like and Adventure and like going off the beaten path, then SXSW is the perfect way to spend your spring break! SXSW is a two week music and film festival located in the heart of Austin Texas. The fest has just about everything you would need for a great spring break! If you’re not someone who can commit to the full two weeks then I highly suggest making it out for the second week which consists of just concerts and all things music. I had the opportunity to get an all access pass to the music week. While this was great for meet and greets it’s by no means necessary in order to have a good time. Most of the concerts are free at SXSW, but expect to wait in line if you're planning on seeing a big artist, However; the real fun is in going to the smaller venues and seeing the up and coming artists. SXSW usually will release a list of everyone performing and let you know which artist This year I went to a free show on West 6th street where I got to see MAX and Party Pupils perform and it was the most fun I had all weekend! The venue wasn’t crowded and the bbar was serving $4 margaritas just to make it that much better. The majority of the festival takes place in one central area, 6th Street, this is Austin’s bar scene and it has a variety of venues. This was super easy for not only bar hopping but venue hopping as well. For instance, If you didn’t like the artist performing at one venue chances are you can just hop across the street and find one that interests you more.
While most festival goers are night owls I highly recommend starting the festival during the day. The weather will most likely be nice and it’s less crowded since people are still working their day jobs. It’s also a lot easier to get into concerts that start during the day. I expected to wait hours for Salt n Peppa but me and my friends strolled right in. this also gives you a chance to check out some of Austin’s amazing food and hit those happy hours. During the fest you’ll find food trucks everywhere and there's no way you can go more than a few blocks without finding some tacos. And what is better than seeing some great bands with a cold drink in one hand and a taco in another?!
Austin is known as the city with the slogan “Keep Austin Weird” and that certainly applies to fashion! There really isn’t the typical “festival style” at SXSW that you would see at something like Coachella or Firefly. Style was all over the place you could see a girl wearing 6 inch stilettos and a bodycon dress at one concert then see another girl wearing a floral dress and a flower crown at another. There is no trend associated with this so just dress your personality and have fun with it!
SXSW is an all encompassing experience and a festival that anyone can enjoy. People come from all over the world for this fest and to experience the best Austin has to offer! Don’t skip out on this, and make this your top Spring Break destination!
